The editor of this newspaper recently won a gold medal in a friendly karate tournament held by his club. The 2024 Novice Shotokan Competition was held on 17th August 2024 as an introduction to competitive karate for novices from Shotokan Karate Club and Shotokan Karate Perth.

Originally envisioned as a way for the kids from both clubs to gain experience of the protocols of competition in a friendly and low-pressure environment. However, the editor managed to bully the organisers into opening a veteran's division so that he could get use out of the various equipment bought for tournaments and to gratify his need for performance.

The veteran's kata division had three competitors thanks to Shotokan Karate Perth coercing a dad into participating. With three competitors a medal was guaranteed and by showing excessive enthusiasm the editor was able to overcome his lack of ability to take out the gold medal.
